BREAKING: Gunmen Abduct Edo PDP Chairman, Tony Aziegbemi
The Chairman of the Edo State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Tony Aziegbemi, was reportedly abducted by gunmen.
This incident took place at about 7 pm on Friday, shortly after the expiration of the party’s State Working Committee.
According to sources, Aziegbemi was kidnapped at the entrance of his house in Benin City, following a meeting with the governor.
The abductors blocked the chairman’s vehicle as it approached the compound, took him, and left the driver behind.
It was noted that the PDP’s candidate for the upcoming governorship election, Asue Ighodalo, was meant to join the meeting with the governor but was unable to do so as he was engaged in discussions with the party’s leaders in Uromi.
The purpose of the meeting between the abducted chairman and the governor was reported to involve plans for establishing a caretaker committee to manage the party’s affairs until a new executive is elected.
“Our plan is to set up a Caretaker Committee to take over the affairs of the party since we have a very important election coming up on September 21, 2024. The Aziegbemi-led State Exco ended on Thursday, March 14, 2024.
“As you may be aware, conducting a fresh PDP State Congress in Edo State when the governorship election is around the corner may weaken our togetherness as one party towards winning the election,” Asue said.
The Edo State Police Command’s Public Relations Officer, Chidi Nwabuzor, requested time to provide a response when contacted regarding the abduction.
