OFFICIAL: US Donald Trump Signs Order Withdrawing US From UN Bodies
The President of the United States, Donald Trump, has officially signed an executive order declaring the withdrawal of the nation from the United Nations Human Rights Council.
This order also includes the decision to pull the US out of the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East, commonly referred to as UNRWA.
During the signing of this order on Tuesday, Trump called for a comprehensive review of America’s participation in UNESCO, emphasizing that the UN must uphold fairness to nations deserving of equitable treatment.
According to reports from DAILY POST, the United States has been the largest contributor to UNRWA, donating nearly $500 million annually.
However, in January 2024, former President Joe Biden decided to halt funding following accusations from Israel regarding the involvement of several UNRWA staff members in a Hamas attack that sparked conflict in Gaza.
Consequently, the US Congress has formally suspended contributions to UNRWA until at least March 2025.
Trump’s announcement regarding the withdrawal aligns with the recent visit of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to Washington.
“I always felt the UN has always had tremendous potential but it’s not living up to it’s potential,” Trump said
Previously, Trump stated that he believes Palestinians have no choice but to vacate Gaza, suggesting they could relocate to territories in neighboring Jordan and Egypt, while also indicating that he does not necessarily condone Israeli settlements in Gaza.
“I just support cleaning it up and doing something with it,” he said referring to the embattled strip.
Report noted that this is not the first financial setback for UNRWA during Trump’s administration.
In his first term, he suspended funding for the agency, insisting that Palestinians agree to resume peace negotiations with Israel and demanding unspecified reforms.
Since taking office on January 20, the Trump administration has also issued orders to withdraw from the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Paris Climate Agreement.
