“They Just Want Us Out”: Blind Couple Alleges Discrimination by Landlady

A wave of public support has emerged for John and Janet Paul, a couple with visual impairments, who claim they are being forced to leave their rented apartment in Abuja. The couple alleges their landlady issued them a quit notice after discovering their blindness, despite years of peaceful tenancy.
In an interview, John Paul recounted their difficult situation. “We’ve been under immense pressure. Our landlady is demanding we vacate the premises, making disparaging remarks. We secured this residence through an agent and lived here without issue until she took occupancy last year. Since then, she’s made it clear she doesn’t want visually impaired tenants,” he stated.
He refuted claims of unpaid rent, saying, “We are not in arrears. She served us a quit notice last month, citing renovation as the reason. However, relocating would impose a significant financial burden we cannot bear.”
The couple’s plight has sparked widespread online reactions, with many Nigerians expressing outrage and offering assistance.
One social media user, Temitope Abiola, called for a crowdfunding initiative, urging a news outlet to facilitate a GoFundMe campaign. “Let’s rally support for this family. To the landlady, remember, we are all tenants of a higher power. Allowing them to reside in your property rent-free would be a true act of service,” he posted.
Another individual, Samuel Zacheus, condemned the alleged discrimination. “Their story is heartbreaking. Discrimination against people with disabilities is unacceptable. Please provide their account details; compassionate individuals will step forward,” he wrote.
Stlivingstone Ekanem offered housing assistance if the couple resided in his city, stating, “If they were in Jos, I’d provide them with a rent-free apartment. Please coordinate support for those who wish to help. Visual impairment is not a choice, and kindness is essential.”
