Jigawa Governor Rejects Danjuma’s Self-Defence Proposal, Stresses Dialogue

Governor Umar Namadi of Jigawa State has dismissed former Chief of Army Staff General Theophilus Danjuma’s suggestion that Nigerians should defend themselves against insecurity.
Speaking on Channels Television, Namadi warned, “If he says that citizens should be allowed to defend themselves, I think you are causing anarchy. His words need to be analysed carefully.”
Namadi pointed to Jigawa’s deployment of over 9,900 security guards and the establishment of community engagement strategies as evidence of government commitment to security. He stressed that the country “has not reached that level yet” where self-defence is necessary.
The governor advocated for the creation of State Police, noting that the idea is gaining traction among states and is under discussion at the federal level.
General Danjuma, however, maintained that “relying on the government for protection is no longer realistic,” urging citizens to take matters into their own hands.
