Ogun State Shines as National Sports Festival Closes with Presidential Praise
The 22nd National Sports Festival, dubbed the Gateway Games 2024, came to a grand close on Thursday in Abeokuta, Ogun State, with President Bola Tinubu commending the host state for delivering a world-class sporting event. The President, represented by Senate President Godswill Akpabio, joined top officials including Ogun Governor Dapo Abiodun and Bayelsa Governor Douye Diri at the MKO Abiola Sports Arena for the closing ceremony.
Over 12 days, the festival brought together approximately 10,000 athletes from across Nigeria’s 36 states, the Federal Capital Territory, and invited junior athletes, competing fiercely in multiple sports. President Tinubu highlighted the athletes’ dedication, saying, “Your zeal has contributed to the success of this world-class event hosted by Ogun State.”
Governor Abiodun reflected on the collective commitment that made the festival a memorable experience for the nation. “It has taken an entire state united in purpose to deliver an experience that our nation will not forget in a hurry,” he remarked.
Delta State once again dominated the competition, securing the overall championship for the fifth straight time. The baton will now pass to Enugu State, which will host the 23rd edition in 2026.
