Flood Ravages Mokwa: President Tinubu Commands Swift Restoration of Key Bridge

In the wake of the catastrophic floods that swept through Mokwa, Niger State, President Bola Tinubu has mandated the Federal Ministry of Works to expedite repairs on the vital bridge connecting Nigeria’s north and south. The flood disaster on May 29 claimed 158 lives and caused widespread devastation.
Minister of State for Works, Bello Goronyo, led a delegation to Mokwa on Tuesday to deliver the president’s condolences and assess the damage. Speaking to the village head, Goronyo relayed President Tinubu’s firm instructions to restore the damaged infrastructure promptly.
“The President gave a clear directive for me to come and commiserate with the government and people of Niger state over the ugly incident,” Goronyo stated. “He said we should do everything possible to restore the access road for vehicular movement on the damaged bridge washed away by the flood. The president directed that we provide an access road for vehicular movement and create an access road due to the high volume of articulated vehicles carrying goods from the north to the south.”
The Ministry plans to not only repair the destroyed bridge but also create alternative routes to sustain the flow of goods and services critical to the nation’s economy. Goronyo emphasized Niger State’s pivotal role in the federal road network, given its strategic location.
Alhaji Mohammed Aliyu, the Ndalila of Mokwa, reported that the floods destroyed more than 200 homes and four bridges, including the main and rail bridges connecting the region. Many people remain unaccounted for, and he called on the government to provide resettlement support for displaced residents.
Deputy Governor Yakubu Garba thanked the president for his visit and expressed appreciation for the federal government’s commitment to supporting Niger State during this crisis.
