Just In: Former NUPENG Sec-Gen Kokori Is Dead
Frank Kokori, who served as the Secretary-General of the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG), has unfortunately passed away.
He died on Thursday at a hospital in Warri, Delta State, as confirmed by his Personal Assistant, Atawada Oke.
In recent months, Kokori had been fighting a kidney-related illness, which ultimately led to his demise. On November 9, he expressed concerns about his health from his hospital bed.
Just a day after, Governor Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta State paid a visit to Kokori and assured him that the state would provide necessary assistance for his access to high-quality medical treatment.
Kokori played a pivotal role in the movement against the annulment of the June 12, 1993, presidential election in Nigeria.
He actively organized and galvanized workers to protest against the annulment and the ruling military junta at that time. As a result of his activism, he faced arrest and detention by the military government.
The passing of Frank Kokori marks the end of an era for NUPENG and the wider labor movement in Nigeria. His contributions to the fight for democracy and workers’ rights leave behind a legacy that will be remembered and cherished.
