Just In: Supreme Court Affirms Sanwo-Olu As Lagos Governor
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State has had his election affirmed by the Supreme Court.
Justice Inyang Okoro, leading a five-member panel, unanimously dismissed two separate appeals brought by candidates Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour of the Labour Party (LP) and Abdulazeez Adediran of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
The appeals challenged Sanwo-Olu’s victory in the governorship election held on March 18.
The LP and its candidate argued that Sanwo-Olu’s running mate, Obafemi Hamzat, held dual citizenship, making him constitutionally ineligible to contest the election.
However, the Supreme Court ruled that there was no evidence to support the allegation that Hamzat had denounced his Nigerian citizenship, and therefore, the appeals lacked merit.
The Court upheld the decisions of the lower courts, affirming Sanwo-Olu’s qualification to run in the election.
