NLC Announced Two-day Protest Over Economic Hardship
The Nigeria Labour Congress has announced its plans to carry out a two-day nationwide protest on February 27 and 28, 2024.
The protest comes in the wake of a 14-day ultimatum issued by the NLC to the Federal Government, set to expire on February 23.
During a press briefing in Abuja, NLC’s National President, Joe Ajaero, stated that the decision to proceed with the protest was made following an emergency meeting of the National Executive Council.
This meeting focused on the country’s economic situation and concerns related to insecurity.
On February 8, both the NLC and the Trade Union Congress presented a two-week ultimatum to the government, outlining various demands such as wage increases and improved access to public services.
The groups criticized the government for failing to implement promised measures to mitigate the impact of recent reforms.
Ajaero emphasized the importance of the Federal Government honoring the deadline set by the 14-day ultimatum, highlighting the challenges faced by millions of Nigerian workers, including food scarcity, loss of purchasing power, and insecurity exacerbated by economic reforms.
These reforms included the removal of a costly fuel subsidy by President Bola Tinubu’s administration in May, as well as the relaxation of restrictions on currency trading, which led to a significant increase in petrol prices.
Further updates on the situation are expected to be released in due course.
