BREAKING: Iranian Rapper, Salehi Sentenced To Death For Backing Anti-hijab Movement
Iranian rapper Toomaj Salehi has been condemned to death by a court in Iran for his vocal support of the anti-hijab protests.
Salehi has been imprisoned for over 18 months for his involvement in the widespread demonstrations that followed the death of Mahsa Amini, who died in custody in 2022 after being detained for wearing a hijab deemed “improper”.
His attorney Amir Raisian on Wednesday said, “Branch 1 of Isfahan Revolutionary Court… sentenced Toomaj Salehi to death on the charge of corruption on Earth.”
He was taken into custody in October 2022 for publicly backing the protests.
The Revolutionary Court had accused Salehi of “assistance in sedition, assembly and collusion, propaganda against the system and calling for riots.”
Despite the Iranian Supreme Court’s directive to revisit and rectify the sentence, the lower court has upheld the death penalty.
However, the court had “in an unprecedented move, emphasised its independence and did not implement the Supreme Court’s ruling,” according to Raisian.
Raisian said the rapper “will certainly appeal against the sentence.”
