JUST IN: FIFA Launches Investigation On Argentinian Players’ Racist Chants
FIFA has launched an investigation into racist and homophobic chants by Argentina players, including Enzo Fernandez, after their Copa America victory.
“FIFA is aware of a video circulating on social media and the incident is being looked into. FIFA strongly condemns any form of discrimination by anyone including players, fans and officials,” according to a spokesperson for world football’s governing body.
The offensive chants, which targeted French star Kylian Mbappe, were captured in a live video posted on social media by Fernandez from the team bus.
The video showed players singing a chant that originated during the 2022 World Cup final, where Argentina defeated France.
The French Football Federation has filed a complaint with FIFA regarding the incident. Chelsea, Fernandez’s club, has already initiated an internal disciplinary procedure against him.
Fernandez, who holds the record for the most expensive transfer in Premier League history, has since apologized for his actions.
The club said in a statement: “Chelsea Football Club finds all forms of discriminatory behaviour completely unacceptable.
“We acknowledge and appreciate our player’s public apology and will use this as an opportunity to educate.
“The Club has instigated an internal disciplinary procedure.”
