NCAA Slams “Unacceptable” Deportations, Threatens Airline Penalties

The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has issued a strong warning to international airlines concerning the rising number of complaints from Nigerian passengers who are being deported mid-journey. These passengers are often transported to transit destinations only to be denied entry and subsequently returned to Nigeria, causing significant distress and inconvenience. The NCAA has condemned this practice, emphasizing the detrimental impact it has on both the passengers and the reputation of Nigeria’s aviation industry.
Michael Achimugu, the Director of Consumer Protection and Public Affairs at the NCAA, released a statement on Thursday addressing the issue. He stated, “These actions, which involve the refusal of boarding or denial of entry at intermediate or transit stops due to visa and travel restrictions, are completely unacceptable.” The NCAA has underscored the responsibility of airlines to ensure passengers are fully informed about potential entry obstacles before the commencement of their travel. They assert that passengers should not be subjected to the ordeal of being denied entry and returned to Nigeria upon arrival at transit points.
The NCAA has referenced the Nigeria Civil Aviation Regulations 2023 (Part 19.21.1.1) to reiterate the legal obligation of airlines and their agents to provide travelers with accurate and updated information regarding potential entry restrictions before departure. The authority mandates that airlines implement thorough screening procedures and furnish passengers with precise details concerning their travel documents and visa requirements prior to issuing tickets or allowing boarding.
In response to the growing concern, the NCAA has announced the implementation of immediate enforcement measures. “Effective immediately, any airline found engaging in such practices will face regulatory action, including fines, suspension of flight operations, or other penalties deemed appropriate,” Achimugu warned. The NCAA has expressed its expectation for full cooperation from all airlines in upholding the integrity and professionalism of the aviation industry and ensuring the well-being of Nigerian passengers.
