Former Militant Leader Tompolo Faces EFCC Probe Over Naira Abuse Video
The EFCC has declared its intention to summon Chief Government Ekpemupolo, widely known as Tompolo, to answer questions related to an alleged abuse of the Nigerian currency.
The announcement came after a video surfaced online depicting Tompolo at his April birthday party, where a man was seen spraying bundles of ₦1,000 notes in his presence.
The anti-corruption agency reiterated on its official X account that “Nobody is above the law. Tompolo will have questions to answer!” The post was accompanied by a graphic showing the currency abuse.
The video, initially posted by Harrison A (@#harreceipts) on Sunday, ignited a public outcry, with many Nigerians urging the EFCC to take action against Tompolo. Critics argue that the commission enforces currency abuse laws selectively, especially against less influential individuals.
Section 21(3) of the Central Bank of Nigeria Act 2007 (as amended) prohibits the spraying or defacing of naira notes, with penalties including fines and imprisonment. The EFCC has previously prosecuted high-profile figures such as socialite E-Money and Bobrisky for similar offenses.
Social media users expressed frustration over perceived inconsistencies. One user tweeted, “Okoya’s son is still walking freely and you expect them to go for Tompolo? Their laws are only effective when the offender is not from the rich class.”
This development adds to ongoing debates about the impartiality of Nigeria’s anti-corruption efforts.
