PDP’s Wike Sounds Alarm: “Selfishness Will Kill PDP, Tinubu Set to Win Again in 2027”

Nyesom Wike, Nigeria’s Minister of the Federal Capital Territory and former Rivers State Governor, has issued a dire warning to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), predicting another defeat by President Bola Tinubu in 2027 if the party continues to ignore its zoning principles.
Speaking during a media parley on Monday, Wike highlighted how the PDP’s failure to adhere to its constitutional zoning-allowing both the party chairman and presidential candidate to hail from the North in 2023-was a fatal error.
He said, “You have not won an election, yet you are excluding people. It will backfire if you try the same game you played in 2023… Selfishness can kill a system.” Wike called for transparency, urging the party to declare that the 2027 presidential candidate will come from the South to avoid repeating past mistakes.
The PDP’s internal turmoil is compounded by defections to the ruling APC, notably Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’s exit, which Wike defended as a legitimate political move. He criticized the PDP’s leadership for impunity and lack of strategic organization, stating, “No opposition party worth its salt will act with impunity… How many people have you wooed? Instead, you are after one man; every day, you are after Wike.”
In the midst of these challenges, former Senate President Adolphus Wabara inaugurated 40 new members into the PDP Board of Trustees, calling on them to restore the party’s relevance and unity.
Wike also commented on the ongoing Rivers State crisis, revealing that suspended Governor Siminalayi Fubara sought peace talks but continued to undermine reconciliation efforts, describing the situation as “self-inflicted injury.”
To mend internal fractures, the PDP Governors Forum appointed a seven-member reconciliation committee chaired by Bukola Saraki to foster unity ahead of upcoming party conventions.
Wike’s message is a stark reminder: without fundamental change, the PDP faces another crushing defeat to Tinubu’s APC in 2027.
