U.S. President Donald Trump and French President Emmanuel Macron held a meeting on Tuesday on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly, where they clashed over views on Gaza and Palestinian statehood.

According to CNN, Trump dismissed the two-state solution, arguing that it amounts to a “reward” for Hamas.

France recently joined the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, and Portugal in formally recognising Palestine as a state.

Opening the bilateral talks, Trump praised Macron’s diplomatic role, crediting him with helping avert wider global conflicts.

Emmanuel has actually helped me with a couple of the wars,” Trump said.

In response to Macron’s recent remark that if the US president wants a Nobel Peace Prize, he should “put an end to the war in Gaza.”

However, when pressed on Palestinian statehood, Trump doubled down, reiterating that such recognition would effectively serve as a “gift to Hamas.”

“Well, I think it honors Hamas, and you can’t do that because of October 7. You can’t do that. But we want our hostages back,” Trump said.

“You always have to remember, people forget October 7 was one of the most savage days in the history of the world,” the US president said.

Macron, seated beside him, countered by stressing that acknowledging Palestinian statehood does not equate to overlooking Hamas’ October 2023 attacks on Israel.

The Gaza war has been raging since October 7, 2023, when Hamas militants launched an assault on Israel, prompting Israel to retaliate with a sustained military offensive in the Gaza Strip.
