President Buhari finally speaks about Sanusi’s removal from throne

Nigeria’s President, Muhammadu Buhari has reacted to the removal of Muhammed Sanusi II as Emir of Kano on Monday by the state government.

Onyxnewsng reports that Kano State Government, on Monday, dethroned Emir of Kano, Muhammad Sanusi II, over what it said to be disrespect of lawful instructions from Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje of Kano State other lawful authorities.

The online news platform reported earlier that the dethronement of the Emir was after the decision of the State Council Executive, SEC, meeting led by the governor. A new Emir, Aminu Ado Bayero, was immediately declared by the state government as the 15th Emir of Kano to replace the dethroned Sanusi.

After Sanusi was dethroned, President Buhari has said that state governors had the authority to dethrone any traditional ruler in their domain.

Special Assistant to President Muhammadu Buhari on New Media, Tolu Ogunlesi, on Tuesday said, “A sitting governor can dethrone anybody – they have the power. That is the way the system is set up. Nobody is above being dethroned. Governors formally appoint them, present them to the staff of the office and fund their offices.

It actually didn’t start today, it has been so for a long time.

He added, “British deposed Obas of Lagos/Benin 1851/1897; Alake temporarily deposed by 1948 women’s riots; Awo deposed Alaafin 1955; Olowo deposed 1966; Edo military administrator tried to remove Oba of Benin as Chair, State Traditional Rulers Council 1999; Deji of Akure deposed 2010.”
