BREAKING: WAEC postpones WASSCE 2020 over deadly coronavirus
The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has postponed the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for school candidates for 2020 until further notice over the spread of deadly coronavirus.
According TheNations, On Friday 20 March, WAEC’s head of national office in Nigeria, Patrick Ehidiamen Areghan said that the examination earlier fixed to commence on Monday, 6 April, across member nations will no longer be conducted as planned.
In a statement on Friday, Areghan said: “This decision is a demonstration of the organisation’s concern and support for the various protocols being put in place by the federal and state governments of Nigeria and the governments of the other member countries to check the spread of the disease.”
He added that upon the improvement of the global health circumstances that caused the postponement, a new date will be fixed and announced to the public.
Apart from this, Onyxnewsng reported that the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, JAMB, moved the dates of the examinations to end on Saturday and early days of next week in Bayelsa and Rivers State respectively.
The online news platform understands that this information was contained in a statement by the JAMB Head of Media, Dr Fabian Benjamin. He stated that the examination has not been rescheduled as speculated. He also said candidates have been contacted to reprint their slips.
He said, “The board has not rescheduled its examination as being speculated. All examination will be finishing on Saturday with only few centres in Bayelsa and Rivers who will be writing in the early days of next week.
“The board in its determined efforts to give the candidates the best has adjusted the schedules of the remaining candidates in these two states. We have also contacted the few candidates to reprint their slips.”
Fabian Benjamin also revealed that Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board has released Tuesday 2020 UTME results.
