Update: Another fire breaks out in Lagos

Another fire outbreak has happened in Lagos State barely a week after the gas explosion at Abule Ado.

The fire which started about 2am on Saturday at L Close, 7th Avenue Festac Town was stopped by the Lagos State Fire Service and the Federal service station.

The Spokesperson of Lagos State Fire Service, Shakiru Amodu, who confirmed the fire incident said it was caused by careless handling of combustibles and shanty buildings were burnt in the fire outbreak.

Amodu’s words: “The fire started around 2 a.m. but we got the call around 2:27 a.m. We were able to completely put out the fire after two hours of combating it, precisely 5: 35am.

“We are taking time to do proper enumeration of the number of structures affected because it was a shanty area.

“We are also trying to conclude on the cause of the fire and the careless attitude that led to it, they are still trying to hide some facts from us, but generally, it is careless handling of combustible materials.”

In less than a week, onyxnewsng reports that over 20 people died in the Abule Ado explosion and 100 buildings were also affected by the fire.

The fire outbreak caused by an explosion at Abule-Ado area of Lagos on Sunday morning, 15 March 2020 led to the destruction of many properties, such as houses.

From the incident on that day, residents were sighted quickly removing personal items from some of the affected buildings.
Bethlehem Girls College which is located close to the explosion site was also affected during the explosion as students were seen running helter-skelter.

Onyxnewsng reported that students of Bethlehem school escaped, but a nun reportedly died due to rescuing students from the fire outbreak caused by the explosion.

Some students and teachers were trapped inside the building and were unable to be rescued by residents.

The online news platform also reported that the school called on parents to immediately come for their children.

Same day from the explosion, Nigerian Navy hospital Ojo, Lagos was also affected.
