Ogun state Governor gives reasons he can’t reconstruct Sango Ota roads

Ogun State governor, Dapo Abiodun has given reasons he cannot single-handedly reconstruct the bad roads in Sango-Ota area of the State.

Recall on Friday that residents of the area called for the reconstruction of their roads, saying “#FixOtaroads”, using the opportunity of the EndSARS protest.

The protest has continued till Sunday as the protesters said they would not stop the protest unless something is done about the roads.

Reacting in a statement on Monday, Gov Abiodun said it is impossible for his State Government to reconstruct a Federal Road without necessary approvals from the Federal Government.

“Let me ‘s’ọ̀rọ̀ sókè’ that it is impossible for our State Government to reconstruct any Federal Road without necessary approvals from the Federal Government, yet we have carried out palliative works and will do more permanent works on these and other roads,” he said.

Abiodun stated that alongside the Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, have approached and consistently pleaded with the Federal Government, to give up these critical roads, among others.

He however said “we are still awaiting a positive response, so that we may ensure safe travels for the good people of Ogun State.”

The Governor recalled that the first two road projects embarked upon and completed within his first one year in office are in Ado-Odo/Ota Local Government Area, “namely: the Osi Ikola-Navy and AIT/Raypower roads.”

While showing understanding on why the residents took to the streets over the poor conditions of the Lagos-Sango-Abeokuta Expressway, Ota-Idiroko road, and Sango-Oju Ore road, Abiodun said no security agency will intimidate or stop the protesters from making their needs known.

“However, while we have already initiated palliative works on Ota-Idiroko Road; the same thing will commence on the Ota area of Lagos-Sango-Abeokuta Expressway where more, needed materials and equipment will soon be delivered; and full reconstruction of the Sango-Joju Road is awaiting approval from the State Executive Council.

“The condition of these roads has been made worse by the current rains despite the palliative works we have been carrying out pending the expected positive response from the FG.

“Rest assured, our Administration will do every and anything that will ensure a better life for the people,” the statement read in part.

Governor Abiodun appealed to all protesters: “It is your right. But let’s not allow our demonstrations to be hijacked by people with ulterior motives.”
