ASUU Strike: Outcome of Federal Government Meeting With ASUU

Outcome of the federal government meeting with ASUU have emerged.

The meeting between the federal government delegation and the leadership of Academic Staff Union of Universities was a little sketchy.

The two parties did not reveal what was discussed in the closed door meeting which was held on Thursday night.

The meeting which started about 5:00pm was held in order to resolve the nine months strike that have prevented the academic activities in universities across Nigeria.

This meeting is coming after the federal government and ASUU had discussed on lecturers unpaid salaries.

Speaking about the Thursday meeting, ASUU National President, Biodun Ogunyemi told newsmen on Friday that he can not comment on the meeting for now, explaining that he needs to report first to the members.

We shall take back feedback from our members to government next week,” the ASUU National President said.

ASUU insists that universities remain shut till government agrees to meet their demands, but the Federal government on their part said lecturers should resume before they get paid.

Two attempts by both parties negotiating team to meet failed as the meeting was once again postponed.

Outcome of Federal Government Meeting With ASUU

At the beginning of the meeting which was held on Thursday, December 17 2020, the Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige said he is optimistic to give better information on what ASUU members agreed on following the government’s offer.

But, ASUU till this moment, has not released any statement on agreements reached during the closed door meeting.
