BREAKING: Former Chief Of Army Staff Is Dead
The Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja has conveyed sincere condolences on behalf of the Nigerian Army for the passing of retired Major-General Chris Alli, a former Chief of Army Staff (COAS).
The condolence message that was made available to the News Agency of Nigeria in Abuja by Brig-Gen. Onyema Nwachukwu, the Director of Army Public Relations.
Nwachukwu reported that the former COAS passed away due to a brief illness in the early hours of Sunday at the Military Hospital, Lagos.
He highlighted Major-General Chris Alli’s distinguished service to the Army, the Armed Forces of Nigeria, and the nation, noting that he had served with honor and dedication in various capacities, leaving a lasting impact on the nation’s history.
“Alli’s commitment and zeal to duty manifested evidently as he rose through the ranks to become the Director, Military Intelligence (DMI), amongst several other key appointments in the Nigerian army.”
He noted that Alli reached the zenith of his military career when he assumed the position of the 9th Chief of Army Staff (COAS) in November 1993, holding the position until his retirement from service in August 1994.
Born on December 25, 1944, in Koton Karfe, Kogi, General Alli commenced his military journey on October 20, 1967, as a member of the Emergency Short Service Combatant Course. Throughout his career, he served in diverse roles, including staff, instructional, and command positions. At one point, he served as the Military Administrator of Plateau.
“The COAS, Lt.-Gen. Lagbaja, on receiving the disheartening news of his demise, profoundly expressed his condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of the Late COAS.
“He prayed for the repose of his soul and the strength and solace for the family in this difficult time,” the statement said.
