I Was Bullied While Growing Up Because Of My Voice – Singer, Tems Laments
Tems, the Grammy-winning Nigerian singer, recently shared her experience of being bullied due to the pitch of her voice.
In an interview with The Cut, she revealed that she didn’t start speaking until the age of three, and as she grew up, she felt self-conscious about her voice sounding different from other girls.
“I was bullied to the point of tears and was a target of ridicule. This led to the belief that I sounded like a boy, or a frog, with the impression that my voice was ugly.
“I was always in my own little world. When I did make friends, I would try to make them sing my songs and other girls had these sweet, high voices and my voice had a bass.”
It is worth noting that Tems had previously mentioned that she turned to making music as a means to cope with not having many friends.
