In Tehran, hundreds of mourners gathered on Monday for the funerals of Revolutionary Guards who were killed in Syria, allegedly due to an Israeli strike.

This incident adds to the already tense situation in the region during the Israel-Hamas conflict in Gaza.

The strike, which took place in Damascus on Saturday, resulted in the deaths of five members of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), according to the military force.

Iranian media later revealed that the victims included the intelligence chief and deputy chief for Syria within the IRGC.

Coffins draped in the colors of the Iranian flag were carried by mourners, who held a funeral procession and displayed pictures of IRGC General Qassem Soleimani, who was killed by the United States three years ago.

The funeral processions for three of the deceased IRGC members were reported to have been planned, according to state media.

Israel’s military declined to comment on the strike, stating that they do not provide information on reports from foreign media, when asked about the incident.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported that the strike targeted the Mazzeh neighborhood in Damascus, which is known to house IRGC leaders and pro-Iranian Palestinian factions.

According to the British-based monitor, 13 people were killed in the strike.

Additionally, Iran allegedly launched missiles at alleged Islamic State group targets in Syria, striking a businessman’s family home in Iraq’s neighboring western region.

In a statement carried by Iran’s official IRNA news agency, the IRGC said its Iraq strike was “in response to the recent vicious actions of the Zionist regime (Israel) which martyred the commanders of the Revolutionary Guards and the resistance front.”

Last month, a strike in Syria resulted in the death of Razi Moussavi, a senior commander of the Quds Force, the foreign operations arm of the IRGC. Iranian state media blamed this strike on an Israeli missile attack.

Another strike in southern Lebanon killed Wissam Tawil, a high-ranking member of Hezbollah, marking the most significant casualty within the organization since the start of the Israel-Hamas conflict.
