Just In: US-based Lecturer Shot Dead Osun, Adeleke Orders Investigation
A Nigerian lecturer and member of the Peoples Democratic Party who was based in the United States, Mr. Richard Idowu, was fatally shot in the Ejigbo area of Osun State.
The incident, which took place on a Saturday evening, caused distress in the community and sparked tension among the residents.
The shooting occurred at the private residence of Prince Eniola Oyeyode during the 50th anniversary celebration of Oba Omowonuola Oyeyode, the Ogiyan of Ejigbo.
It was reported that Idowu was attending the coronation anniversary and was then called to a meeting at Eniola’s residence along Inisa Road in Ejigbo.
During the meeting, which was also attended by a member of the All Progressives Congress, Mr. Ayodele Asalu, and another individual identified as Mr. Timothy, gunshots were heard as the meeting concluded.
Tragically, Idowu was struck by a bullet in the leg and succumbed to his injuries while receiving treatment in a private hospital in Ejigbo.
An eyewitness, who chose to remain anonymous, provided details of the incident to newsmen while a Personal Assistant to the deceased, Afiz Lawal, who was present during the shooting, narrated the sequence of events.
The tragic occurrence has left the community in mourning and raised concerns about the safety and security of residents.
“Immediately after the coronation party, we were about to start coming to Osogbo when Prince Eniola, son of Ogiyan, told us to go to his house along Inisa Road in Ejigbo for a brief meeting. Those who attended the meeting include Hon. Asler (Ayodele Asalu) and one Hon Timothy.
“When the meeting ended, they all dispersed and were entering their vehicles. I heard Prince Eniola say, release, asking a local hunter there on the premises to release gunshots into the air. Unfortunately, instead of firing into the air, he shot towards the ground. And that was how Hon Richard Idowu was hit on the leg, and he immediately fell.
“Before we could get him to the hospital, he had already lost so much blood and there is no good hospital in Ejigbo. He gave up at a private hospital in Ejigbo. The incident happened between 8:00 and 8:30 pm on Saturday. He was a PDP chieftain and a lecturer based in the United States of America,” the eye witness and hid PA said.
