BREAKING: ₦200m Fine Imposed On AEDC For Breaching NERC’s New Tariff Order
The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission has initiated enforcement measures against Abuja Electricity Distribution Plc (“AEDC”) for failing to adhere to the Supplementary Order accompanying the April 2024 Multi-Year Tariff Order 2024 specific to AEDC.
AEDC has been penalized with a fine of ₦200,000,000 (Two Hundred Million Naira) for not complying with the specified customer band classifications for tariff billing.
This verdict results from a comprehensive assessment and customer input which uncovered that AEDC had applied the new tariff across all customer bands, in violation of the Order aimed at ensuring fair billing practices.
Consequently, AEDC is required to:
1. Reimburse customers in Bands B, C, D, and E who were billed above the designated tariff bands as outlined in the Order.
2. Reimburse affected customers by providing the balance of customer tokens they are owed at the applicable rates, with all token reimbursements to be distributed to impacted customers by 11 April 2024.
3. Pay a fine of ₦200,000,000.00 (Two Hundred Million Naira) for the blatant infringement of the Commission’s Order.
4. Submit proof of compliance with the directives outlined in points a and c to the Commission by 12 April 2024.
This decisive action by the Commission underscores its dedication to safeguarding consumer rights and upholding fairness within Nigeria’s electricity sector.
