JUST IN: EFCC Begging Ex-Kogi Governor, Yahaya Bello — Lawyer Reveals
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has faced accusations of showing leniency towards politicians while being tougher on internet fraudsters known as “Yahoo boys”.
A lawyer and public affairs analyst, Liborous Oshoma, highlighted this issue during an interview on Arise TV.
He emphasized that the EFCC chairman’s actions have reinforced the perception that the agency is not handling cases involving politicians diligently.
An earlier report by News Week Nigeria revealed that the EFCC withdrew its application at the Court of Appeal concerning the former Governor of Kogi State, Yahaya Bello.
The reason cited for the withdrawal was that the matter had already been ruled upon by the Kogi State High Court, as disclosed in a court application submitted at the Court of Appeal, Abuja judicial division.
In the court filing made by J. S. Okutepa, SAN, and others on behalf of the Commission, it was stated that the appeal was considered untimely due to the prior judgment by Justice Jamil J. of the Kogi High Court on April 17, 2024.
The EFCC requested the court to dismiss the appeal on the grounds of being both late and deficient.
Additionally, the EFCC intensified its efforts to prosecute Yahaya Bello for allegedly embezzling public funds.
Bello has been declared wanted by the EFCC and is accused of misappropriating approximately N80 billion from the Kogi State treasury.
