‘I’m Not An Afrobeats Artiste’ – Flavour Clarifies
Nigerian singer Flavour (Chinedu Okoli) has clarified his stance on the Afrobeats genre, stating that he doesn’t identify as an Afrobeats artist.
In a recent interview on the “Afrobeats Podcast” with Shopsydoo, Flavour expressed his indifference to not receiving credit for Afrobeats’ global success, emphasizing that his contributions to African music deserve recognition beyond the Afrobeats label.
He argued that the media’s narrow focus on Afrobeats overlooks other popular African genres, and urged for more inclusive promotion of diverse African music styles, such as High-life, which he is known for.
“I don’t feel bad when I’m not given credit on the global rise of African music because what the media is talking about is Afrobeats. I’m not an Afrobeats artiste,” he said.
“What I’m doing is African music. There are guys like Fally Ipupa, Diamond Platinumz who are pushing African music globally that are not Afrobeats artists.
“Most times, the media just talks about Afrobeats. They are not talking about African music. If you talk about African music, of course, you should mention my name.”
