Pause Law Threatening TikTok Ban -Trump Orders US Supreme Court
U.S. President-elect Donald Trump has ordered the Supreme Court to pause the enforcement of a law that could either ban the widely used social media app TikTok or compel its sale.
Trump mentioned that he would have the opportunity to seek a political solution regarding the matter after he assumes office.
The Supreme Court is scheduled to hear the case’s arguments on January 10.
The legislation stipulates that TikTok’s Chinese parent company, ByteDance, must sell the platform to an American entity or face a prohibition.
In April, US Congress voted to outlaw the app if ByteDance does not divest by January 19.
TikTok, with a user base exceeding 170 million in the U.S., along with its parent company, is pushing for the law to be overturned.
However, should the court not rule in their favor and no sale occurs, the app could be effectively prohibited in the U.S. on January 19, just a day before Trump is set to take office.
This newfound support for TikTok contrasts with Trump’s stance in 2020, when he aimed to block the app and require its sale to American businesses due to concerns over its Chinese ownership.
Additionally, it also highlights TikTok’s extensive efforts to forge relationships with Trump and his administration during the presidential campaign.
It is worthy of note that TikTok had previously appealed to the U.S. Supreme Court to temporarily halt the law mandating its Chinese owner either to sell the app or cease operations within a month.
