MTN Announces Cyber Attack, Assures Customers Swift Operation
MTN Nigeria has confirmed a recent cyber attack but assured customers, partners, and stakeholders that its core infrastructure remains secure and uncompromised. The company stressed that the breach did not impact Nigeria.
In a statement released on Thursday, the telecom giant revealed it had identified “unauthorised activity” within its network systems and responded promptly to isolate and contain the threat.
Toriola stated: “We take cybersecurity very seriously and have robust systems in place to detect, isolate, and neutralize threats. Although this attack attempted to breach our defenses, our security protocols worked as intended, and our core infrastructure remains secure.”
Karl Toriola, CEO of MTN Nigeria, stated that initial investigations suggest the attackers tried to disrupt services, but critical systems—including customer data and essential operations—remained unaffected.
Although MTN did not provide details about the source or nature of the attack, experts highlight that telecom providers across Africa are increasingly targeted by cybercriminals due to the region’s expanding digital economy and large user base.
A trusted source within the company reiterated that Nigeria was not affected, further confirming the stability of its local operations.
This incident occurs amid Nigeria’s broader push for digital transformation, which places greater responsibility on service providers to strengthen cybersecurity.
MTN added that it is working closely with relevant authorities and cybersecurity experts to thoroughly investigate the breach and bolster its defenses.
