Nnamdi Kanu Trial: DSS Witness Admits No Weapons Found During Arrest

During the ongoing trial of IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu, a DSS witness testified that no weapons of terrorism were found on Kanu when he was arrested in Lagos in October 2015.

The witness, code-named PWAAA, confirmed Kanu’s followers’ allegiance to him.

The DSS operative had earlier presented evidence including a video of Kanu’s interrogation and a written statement in which Kanu admitted to establishing Radio Biafra in London. The witness also detailed the items recovered from Kanu, which included personal belongings and radio equipment displayed in court.

Under cross-examination by Kanu’s lead counsel, PWAAA identified Simon Ekpa as another person involved in the secessionist movement, and said he was not aware of any other person being prosecuted for Biafran agitation. The witness stated that Kanu is charged with terrorism-related offenses involving violence, but said Kanu is not personally charged with violence, only remotely for allegedly instructing attacks on government property.

The witness said he did not remember Kanu apologizing for calling Nigeria a zoo and acknowledged that the items recovered were Kanu’s personal property, but his intentions were questionable. PWAAA admitted to analyzing Kanu’s cell phone, though the findings were not presented in court, and that Kanu’s statement was obtained without his lawyer present.

The court has adjourned the case until May 6 for continuation.
