Pope Leo Prays for Benue Massacre Victims, Calls for Justice Amid Rising Violence in Nigeria

In a heartfelt message delivered before the Sunday Angelus prayer at the Vatican, Pope Leo offered prayers for the victims of a brutal massacre in Benue State, Nigeria. The Pope described the incident as a “terrible massacre” in which around 200 people were “brutally killed” in Yelwata, Guma Local Government Area, during the night of June 13 and 14.
He revealed that most victims were internally displaced persons who had sought refuge with the local Catholic mission, emphasizing the tragic targeting of vulnerable groups. This massacre reflects the ongoing violence plaguing Nigeria’s Middle Belt region.
Pope Leo prayed earnestly for “security, justice, and peace” in Nigeria, expressing particular concern for the “rural Christian communities of the Benue State who have been relentless victims of violence.” His remarks highlight the persistent insecurity faced by these communities.
The international spotlight on Nigeria’s Middle Belt crisis has intensified as attacks on farming communities have led to widespread displacement and fatalities. Human rights organizations have condemned the Nigerian government’s failure to adequately protect civilians.
On Saturday, Amnesty International Nigeria issued a statement urging the government to “immediately end the almost daily bloodshed in Benue State and bring the actual perpetrators to justice.” The group pointed out that the killings demonstrate a “deepening failure of the state to protect vulnerable communities,” especially those displaced by earlier violence.
The massacre in Benue remains a critical issue demanding urgent attention to restore peace and security in the region.
