Brazil Head Coach Carlo Ancelotti Handed One-Year Sentence— Reason
Carlo Ancelotti, current head coach of the Brazil national football team, has been handed a one-year prison sentence for tax fraud, according to The Sun UK.
The case stems from 2014, during Ancelotti’s time managing Real Madrid, when he was found guilty of failing to declare income tied to his image rights. Spanish authorities accused the Italian of concealing earnings in order to avoid paying more than £833,000 in taxes.
While Ancelotti has been cleared of additional tax-related charges from 2015—also linked to his image rights—the court found him guilty for the 2014 offense.
Despite the conviction, it’s unlikely the 66-year-old will serve time behind bars. Under Spanish law, prison sentences under two years for non-violent first-time offenders are typically suspended.
Ancelotti, who managed Real Madrid from 2013 to 2015 before returning in 2021, also had managerial stints at Bayern Munich, Napoli, and Everton. He officially took charge of the Brazil national team earlier this year.
Throughout the investigation, Ancelotti consistently denied any intentional wrongdoing, though he had previously underpaid taxes.
