JUST IN: Brawl Erupts in Mexican Senate Over U.S. Military Intervention Claims

Mexican senators clashed on Wednesday following a heated debate over accusations that the opposition had urged the United States to launch a military intervention against drug cartels.

Alejandro Moreno, leader of the opposition PRI party, stormed to the podium at the close of the session and confronted Senate president Gerardo Fernández Noroña of the ruling Morena party, accusing him of denying him the floor.

In a video shared on social media by the Senate, Moreno is seen repeatedly shoving Fernández Noroña, slapping him on the neck, and knocking down another man who attempted to step in.

The scuffle erupted after a tense exchange in which the PRI and PAN were accused of supporting U.S. military involvement in Mexico—allegations both parties rejected.

Fernández Noroña later announced plans to file a complaint against Moreno for assault and to push for his legislative immunity to be lifted.

The debate could be very harsh, very bitter, very strong… today when (opposition legislators) are exposed for their treason, they lose their minds because they were exposed,” he said.

Moreno accused Norona of initiating the attack, saying on social media platform X: “He was the one who started the attack; he did it because he couldn’t silence us with arguments.”

Both men are already under scrutiny for separate controversies. Moreno faces possible impeachment over alleged corruption during his time as governor of Campeche state between 2015 and 2019. Fernández Noroña has drawn criticism after reports surfaced that he owns a luxury home, despite President Claudia Sheinbaum’s call for public officials to lead modest lives.

The dispute comes amid U.S. media reports that former President Donald Trump instructed the Pentagon to consider military action against Latin American drug cartels designated as terrorist groups.

For its part, Mexico stressed that it “would not accept the participation of US military forces on our territory.
