Just In: Bauchi Varsity Postponed Resumption Date
The resumption of students at Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University in Bauchi has been postponed to January 7, 2024, according to the university management.
The postponement comes in the wake of a tragic incident involving a final year Geology student, Joseph Agabaidu.
Reports indicate that Agabaidu was stabbed by unidentified assailants when he attempted to retrieve his girlfriend’s stolen bag. Tragically, he later passed away while receiving treatment at the ATBU Teaching Hospital.
The incident sparked outrage among the students, leading to a protest at the Yelwa campus. The students expressed their anger towards the perceived lack of security measures both within and around the campus.
They hoped that their protest would draw the attention of the university management and the government to address the inadequate security situation.
In response to the protest, the university management decided to temporarily shut down the campus for a week.
The Deputy Registrar Academic, Fatima Abdullahi, released a statement directing all students to vacate the campus immediately.
The management labeled the individuals involved in the protest as “miscreants” whose actions disrupted the peace and harmony previously enjoyed on campus.
It is important for the university management and relevant authorities to address the security concerns raised by the students. Ensuring a safe and secure environment is crucial for the overall well-being and academic success of the students.
Additionally, investigations into the tragic incident should be conducted, and appropriate measures must be taken to prevent such occurrences in the future.
However, in a new development, the Director of Information and Public Relations at ATBU, Zailani Bappa, announced that the university’s resumption date has been pushed back to January 7, 2024. This information was made available in a statement released to the press on Friday.
He said, “The Senate of the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi, has extended the date for resumption of undergraduate students of the university to January 7, 2024.
“In an emergency meeting held at the Senate Chamber in Gubi Campus, the Senate resolved that the one-week closure of the university be extended to January 7, 2024.
“The university management earlier announced the closure of the university to all undergraduate students for an initial period of one week, from December 4-10, 2023, to avert possible breakdown of law and order on the two campuses of Yelwa and Gubi.
“This followed an upheaval by some aggrieved students after the demise of one of their colleagues who was reportedly attacked by unknown assailants in Yelwan Ngas, a suburb of Bauchi town which led to his untimely death.”
