JUST IN: NIMC Introduces Mobile App To Facilitate Data Update
The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) recently launched a mobile application designed for Nigerians to easily modify data linked to their National Identification Number (NIN).
This initiative aims to facilitate corrections of inaccuracies in personal information such as name, date of birth, and phone numbers associated with the NIN.
Through the application and online portal, users can register to access this service by providing essential details like their NIN, last name, and email address before initiating the data modification process.
Previously, Nigerians encountered challenges when attempting to modify their NIN data, leading to long queues and inconveniences at NIMC offices nationwide.
In past years, concerns heightened when NIMC introduced fees ranging from N5,000 to N15,000 for correcting errors in the NIN database, including name changes, address updates, card renewals, and date of birth amendments.
Funmi Opensanwo, the NIMC regional coordinator in Alausa, Lagos, clarified that these fees differ based on the specific correction required, with date of birth modifications incurring a higher processing fee of N15,000, while card renewals or replacements carry a fee of N5,000.
Similarly, changing one’s name or address also necessitates a fee of N5,000, with Opensanwo emphasizing that these charges go to the Treasury Single Account (TSA) and not to individuals.
Opensanwo’s statements aimed to address claims of NIMC officials unlawfully demanding fees for NIN-SIM card linking services, coinciding with the Nigeria Communications Commission’s directive for all phone numbers to be linked to an NIN to enhance security measures.
Moreover, the NCC has expanded the compulsory requirement for linking NINs to bank accounts to avoid potential account suspensions for non-compliance.
This move underscores the growing importance of aligning personal identification details across various platforms to ensure national security and data integrity.
