BREAKING: Plane Carrying Malawi’s VP Missing – Govt
A military plane carrying Malawi’s vice president, Saulos Chilima, has gone missing after its failed landing attempt on Monday morning, as confirmed by the government.
“All efforts by aviation authorities to make contact with the aircraft since it went off the radar have failed thus far,” the government said in a statement.
The aircraft departed shortly after 9:00 am local time, with Chilima, 51 years old, and nine other individuals on board.
President Lazarus Chakwera has taken prompt action by instructing regional and national authorities to launch an immediate search and rescue mission to locate the missing aircraft.
Consequently, Chakwera has canceled his planned trip to the Bahamas for official engagements.
Chilima’s authority was revoked in 2022 when he was arrested and accused of corruption related to a bribery case involving a British-Malawian entrepreneur.
However, last month, the charges against Chilima were dropped by a Malawian court following his consistent presence during legal proceedings.
The incident has been reported by AFP.
