Trump Administration Eyes Major Embassy Closures in Africa

The Trump administration is evaluating a proposal to close US embassies in several African countries, including Lesotho, Republic of Congo, Central African Republic, Eritrea, Gambia, and South Sudan, as part of a global reduction in diplomatic missions.
The plan, detailed in an internal memo, also includes shutting down consulates in countries such as France, Germany, and South Africa. The aim is to cut costs and reduce the US diplomatic footprint, with Africa facing the most significant impact.
The proposal is still under review, pending approval by Secretary of State Marco Rubio. If implemented, responsibilities would be shifted to embassies in neighboring countries.
