NANS Calls for Mandatory Drug Tests for Politicians Following NDLEA Proposal

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has urged the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) to extend its proposed mandatory drug testing beyond corps members and prospective couples to political office holders and aspirants.
NDLEA Chairman Brig. Gen. Buba Marwa (retd.) recently advocated for drug integrity tests as preventive measures to curb substance abuse and provide early intervention for those who test positive.
In a statement, NANS Vice President Felicia Akinbodunse welcomed the initiative but warned against selective application that targets only young people. She called for legislation to institutionalize mandatory drug testing for all political aspirants and public office holders at national and state levels.
Akinbodunse emphasized, “If young Nigerians are being asked to undergo mandatory drug tests before entering service or marriage, then those who seek to lead the country and make laws for the people must be held to even higher standards.” She urged NDLEA to collaborate with the National Assembly to enact such laws promptly, stating that a drug-free leadership would inspire public confidence and accountability.
