Prof. Pat Utomi Launches Opposition Shadow Government Amid Federal Government’s Strong Rejection

Prominent economist and political activist, Professor Pat Utomi, has officially inaugurated a shadow government, drawing members from various opposition parties to form what he calls the “Big Tent Coalition Shadow Government.”
The virtual launch on Monday evening positions this group as a credible opposition entity aimed at exposing the shortcomings of President Bola Tinubu’s administration and proposing improved governance strategies.
However, the Federal Government swiftly condemned the initiative. Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, described the move as “an aberration” in Nigeria’s presidential system. He told The PUNCH, “Nigeria is not a parliamentary system where such a system is practised, and there is no provision for such in our statute books.” Idris emphasized that opposition politics must operate “within the bounds of propriety,” noting that Nigeria’s bicameral legislature already provides a platform for opposition voices to contest ideas for nation-building.
In defense, Utomi argued that the current government’s policy failures have exacerbated poverty, driven away multinational companies, and worsened insecurity, especially terrorism in Benue and Plateau states. He lamented the government’s reliance on propaganda and suppression of dissenting views, stating, “The recent spate of defections to the All Progressives Congress provides further evidence that all is not well with democracy in Nigeria.”
The shadow cabinet, comprising notable figures such as human rights lawyer Dele Farotimi and others from diverse opposition backgrounds, will hold weekly meetings to scrutinize government policies and offer alternatives. Utomi highlighted urgent priorities including economic stimulation, decentralised security, constitutional reform, and tackling corruption and poverty. He urged the shadow team to propose practical solutions, saying, “Don’t worry if they steal your ideas and use them-the gain is for Nigeria.”
