Court Rules Against FIFA, UEFA Ban Of European Super League

In a ruling that could have far-reaching implications for the world of football, the European Court of Justice sided with the Super League in a case against FIFA and UEFA.

The court ruled that FIFA and UEFA cannot abuse their power by blocking the formation of the Super League, or by banning the participating clubs.

The powers of FIFA and UEFA are not subject to any such criteria. FIFA and UEFA are, therefore, abusing a dominant position. Moreover, given their arbitrary nature, their rules on approval, control and sanctions must be held to be unjustified restrictions on the freedom to provide services,” the statement read in part.

That does not mean that a competition such as the Super League project must necessarily be approved. The Court does not rule on that specific project in its judgment.”

FIFA and UEFA argued that A22, the company behind the Super League, was breaking the law by attempting to create a new competition that would compete with UEFA’s Champions League.

At the time of the original proposal, a number of major European clubs were involved in the Super League project, including Manchester City, Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Tottenham Hotspur, Manchester United, Atletico Madrid, Inter Milan, Juventus and AC Milan.

However, these clubs ultimately withdrew from the Super League after significant backlash from fans and other stakeholders.

Real Madrid and Barcelona have remained committed to the idea and continue to advocate for its creation.
