UPDATED: Edo PDP Chairman, Tony Aziegbemi Freed From Abduction
The Edo State Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Chairman, Dr. Tony Aziegbemi, who was abducted, has been released by his captors.
According to a party chieftain who shared the news on social media early Tuesday, no details were provided regarding the circumstances of the release.
In a telephone conversation on Tuesday morning, Aziegbemi expressed his happiness at being back home with his family.
He said:, “I am happy to be back home. I thank you for calling and your concern. I am happy to reunite with my family. It comes with terrain.
He mentioned that although kidnapping is a risk in his line of duty, he was not mistreated by the abductors.
“I was not maltreated by my kidnappers but again I am happy to be back home,” he added.
Dr. Aziegbemi was abducted by six gunmen on the night of Friday, March 15, 2024, after a meeting with Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, at Government House. His driver was left unharmed during the incident.
A week after the kidnapping, a family source, speaking anonymously, disclosed that the abductors contacted the family, demanding a ransom of N500 million.
Before the ransom demand was made, a family member named Sam Ogbeiye had appealed to the kidnappers to spare Aziegbemi’s life and contact the family directly.
Ogbeiye also urged security agencies to intensify efforts to secure his release.
The Edo State Police Commissioner, Funsho Adegboye, disclosed at a state command event that the police tactical team, along with vigilante groups and hunters, is conducting search operations in the bushes and creeks to ensure the safe rescue of the victim.
