May Day: Gov Eno Declares First, Third Friday Farm Day
Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom State has reiterated his commitment to aligning with the resolutions put forth by the federal government regarding the national minimum wage, ensuring that civil servants receive fair and just compensation.
During the 2024 International Workers Day celebration in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, the governor acknowledged the unwavering support shown by civil servants since the March 28, 2023 governorship elections.
He expressed his gratitude and emphasized the importance of reciprocating their support by fulfilling the promises he made to them.
According to him: “We will continue to work with you to ensure that we support our workers. If we have succeeded at all, it is because we have the cooperation of all of the workers here, and we will continue to do our best to make you happy.
“On the minimum wage, we will wait on the Federal Government and then we will key into it and come to terms with the minimum wage for Akwa Ibom civil servants.”
Furthermore, Governor Umo Eno encouraged civil servants to engage in agriculture by returning to the farms.
He highlighted that the Bulk Purchase Agency he established serves as a temporary measure to address certain challenges.
In line with this, he proclaimed the first and third Friday of each month as designated Farm Days, providing an opportunity for workers to actively participate in farming activities, thereby contributing to enhancing food security and sufficiency in the state.
“Bulk Purchase Agency is a short term solution to long term problem. The long term project is for everyone to go back to farm and to achieve that I am declaring the first and third Friday of every month as Farm Day in Akwa Ibom State to enable workers to go to farm starting from the governor, deputy and Exco members even the lawmakers, ” he said
This initiative not only aims to boost agricultural productivity but also underscores the significance of self-sufficiency and sustainability in food production.
By promoting farming among civil servants, Governor Umo Eno is fostering a culture of agricultural self-reliance and fostering a sense of community involvement and contribution towards the overall welfare and development of Akwa Ibom State.
