UK Woman Makes History by Giving Birth with a Transplanted Womb

A woman in the UK has become the first to give birth with a transplanted womb, marking a significant milestone in reproductive science.
On Monday, April 7, 2025, scientists celebrated the birth of Amy Isabel Davidson—a joyful culmination of 25 years of dedicated research. Her mother, 36-year-old Grace Davidson, overcame extraordinary odds to start a family after receiving a life-changing womb transplant in 2023.
In a remarkable act of love, Grace’s older sister, Amy, donated her uterus for the pioneering surgery—the first of its kind in the UK. In tribute, the newborn was named Amy Isabel, honouring both her aunt and a surgeon instrumental in developing the procedure.
The birth offers new hope to thousands of women who are born without a womb or whose uterus is unable to function properly.
Grace, an NHS dietitian, and her husband Angus, 37, a finance professional, welcomed their daughter via a planned Caesarean section at Queen Charlotte’s and Chelsea Hospital in London on February 27.
Describing the moment she first held her daughter, Grace said she felt “pure shock,” adding, “We have been given the greatest gift we could ever have asked for.”
“It was just hard to believe she was real. I knew she was ours, but it still felt surreal. Our family is so happy for us—it feels like a sense of wholeness has finally come into our lives,” she shared.
