CAN Applauds Election of Pope Leo XIV, Calls for Peace and Inclusiveness

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has congratulated the Roman Catholic Church on the election of Pope Leo XIV, calling it a “significant milestone” for Catholics worldwide. Archbishop Daniel Okoh, CAN’s president, issued the statement on Friday, emphasizing the joy the election brings to the global Catholic community.
Pope Leo XIV, born Robert Francis Prevost, was elected on May 8, 2025, after a two-day conclave at the Vatican involving 133 cardinal electors. The new pope, the first American to hold the position, was introduced to the faithful from St. Peter’s Basilica balcony amid cheers and applause.
CAN expressed hope that Pope Leo XIV’s leadership would be characterized by peace, justice, and inclusiveness. The association prayed that his pontificate would be blessed with wisdom, good health, and strength to guide the Church in righteousness.
“CAN prays that Pope Leo XIV’s pontificate be blessed with wisdom, good health, and strength to lead God’s people on the path of righteousness. May God guide and strengthen him in his ministry,” the statement read.
Pope Leo XIV, who has served extensively as a missionary and archbishop in Peru, thanked his predecessors and called for a Church that “works together to build bridges and to keep our arms open.” His election marks a new chapter for the Catholic Church, continuing the legacy of Pope Francis.
