Internal Tensions Surface in ADC as It Becomes Platform for Anti-Tinubu Coalition

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) is experiencing internal friction following its adoption by a coalition led by Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi to contest the presidency in 2027. The party’s recent constitutional amendments aimed at integrating new members have met with both approval and pushback.

It was gathered that the ADC amended its constitution to allow new entrants immediate access to party offices and presidential contests, removing previous restrictions requiring two years of membership. National Chairman Ralph Nwosu explained, “We are interested in being a vehicle for the transformation of this country… we are completely willing to take any steps necessary to ensure that everybody’s interest is accommodated.”

The coalition’s selection of the ADC followed the Social Democratic Party’s refusal to merge or be taken over, as stated by SDP National Secretary Olu Agunloye.

State-level reactions vary. Ogun’s Dr. Femi Soluade described ongoing restructuring to accommodate six coalition blocs. Rivers’ Lawrence Egbagiri and Niger’s Musa Hassan expressed willingness to relinquish leadership roles “for the sake of the country” and “after national convention resolution,” respectively.

However, Osun’s Charles Omidiji opposed outright displacement of current leaders, advocating for a “give-and-take situation.” Plateau’s Sabiu Musa and Delta’s Austin Okolie emphasized that leadership changes should respect the contributions of long-serving members.

South-East Vice Chairman Chilos Godsent warned against undemocratic impositions, stressing the importance of mutual restructuring to avoid internal conflict.

As the ADC navigates these internal challenges, its role as the coalition’s platform will be pivotal in shaping Nigeria’s political future ahead of the 2027 elections.
