BREAKING: Lyon Relegated To Ligue 2 Following DNCG Meeting
After a meeting with the Direction Nationale du Contrôle de Gestion (DNCG), Lyon have officially been relegated to Ligue 2, as confirmed by the LFP in a formal statement.
The club had previously received a provisional relegation from the French football financial watchdog, pending improvements to their financial situation. Failure to meet those conditions has now led to their demotion to the second tier.
Eagle Football Group, which owns Lyon, had taken several financial measures in an effort to convince the DNCG of their stability—these included selling John Textor’s shares in Crystal Palace and offloading Lyon’s women’s team.
However, these steps were deemed insufficient. This outcome comes despite Lyon’s owner, John Textor, expressing optimism after the meeting, claiming the club’s financial health had improved and describing the discussions as positive.
Speaking to the press, Textor said, “You can see from the contributions of our shareholders, we have invested new capital, not only for the DNCG, but also for our UEFA licensing process. Not to mention the good news of the sale of Crystal Palace. Our liquidity situation has improved considerably.”
Lyon will now be forced to play their football in the second tier next season.
