Canadian PM Touch Down In Kyiv For Ukrainian Independence Day

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney visited Kyiv on Sunday to commemorate Ukraine’s Independence Day, amid renewed international efforts to end the ongoing war with Russia.

“On this Ukrainian Independence Day, and at this critical moment in their nation’s history, Canada is stepping up our support and our efforts towards a just and lasting peace for Ukraine,” Carney wrote on X as he touched down in the capital.

Carney was invited to Kyiv as a “special guest” to mark the occasion, according to a report by Canadian broadcaster CBC.

“Canada’s support for Ukraine is unwavering, and we are with you every step of the way in your fight to defend your sovereignty and to realise your dreams for your country,” Carney said in a video posted on his X account shortly after arrival in Kyiv.

His trip comes as Russian forces continue to advance slowly in the three-year conflict, with Moscow announcing on Saturday that its troops had captured two villages in the Donetsk region of eastern Ukraine.

Carney’s visit also coincides with dwindling hopes for a summit between the Russian and Ukrainian presidents—a plan strongly backed by U.S. President Donald Trump as part of his push to resolve the war.

In recent days, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has also joined world leaders urging direct talks between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
