The Oyo State Government has officially prohibited “sign out” celebrations by final-year students in both public and private secondary schools across the state.

The decision follows rising reports of misconduct, violence, and public disturbances linked to such events.

In response, the Oyo State Government has moved to enforce a total ban, citing the need to strengthen discipline in schools.

The move is part of broader reforms that also include restrictions on mobile phone use, close monitoring of approved textbooks, and the elimination of illegal levies.

According to the Commissioner for Education, Science, and Technology, Olusegun Olayiwola, who spoke at the 2025/2026 pre-resumption meeting with public school principals at Lagelu Grammar School, Ibadan, the ban prioritises student safety, welfare, and the preservation of a conducive learning environment.

In a statement released through the Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Dotun Oyelade, Olayiwola further reiterated the government’s stance on mobile phone usage in schools.

He stressed that such devices remain a major source of distraction, expose students to non-educational content, and fuel cyberbullying and other forms of misconduct.

The commissioner said, “Schools must remain free of violence, bullying, and intimidation to protect adolescents during their formative years.

“The State Government is using this period to officially ban “sign out” celebrations by final-year students in both public and private secondary schools across the state. This directive comes in response to increasing reports of misconduct, violence, and public disturbances associated with such events.

In addition, principals are directed to recommend only government-approved textbooks, selected for their quality, reusability, and alignment with the curriculum. Compliance with these directives will be closely monitored by the ministry,” he warned.
