UPDATED: Leo Messi Extends His Contract With Inter Miami, See Details

Lionel Messi has signed a contract extension with Inter Miami that will keep the Argentine icon in Major League Soccer until the end of the 2028 season, the club announced on Thursday.

In a post shared on Inter Miami’s official X account, Messi was seen signing the new deal while seated at a table inside the club’s under-construction Freedom Park stadium, accompanied by the simple caption: “He’s Home.”

It makes me really happy to stay here and to continue with this project that, besides being a dream, has become a beautiful reality — playing in this stadium, at Miami Freedom Park,” Messi, 38, said in a club statement.

Since I arrived in Miami, I’ve been very happy, so I’m truly glad to keep going here,” Messi added.

Club co-owner David Beckham hailed Messi’s renewal as a testament to his “commitment to the city, the club, and the sport.”

He’s still as committed as he’s ever been and he still wants to win,” Beckham said.

“As owners to have a player that loves the game as much as he does, and who has done as much for the game in this country and to inspire the next generation of young talent as he has, we feel very lucky.”

Messi’s previous contract was set to expire at the conclusion of the 2025 MLS season, and reports last month indicated that an agreement for an extension had already been reached, making the announcement largely expected.

The new deal guarantees that Messi will remain active through and beyond the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will be jointly hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico. The tournament kicks off on June 11 and will conclude with the final at New Jersey’s MetLife Stadium on July 19.

Messi joined Inter Miami in 2023 following a challenging stint at Paris Saint-Germain. Before that, he spent the majority of his illustrious career at Barcelona, where he rose through the youth ranks and played from 2004 to 2021. During his time there, he captured 10 La Liga titles and four UEFA Champions League trophies.

Internationally, Messi led Argentina to World Cup victory in Qatar in 2022 and has expressed his desire to defend the title next year.

He has scored 114 goals for his country and has also won two Copa América titles in 2021 and 2024.
