House Of Reps Pass Bill To Create A New State
The House of Representatives has on Thursday, 23, October, passed for second reading a bill seeking the creation of Ijebu State from the present Ogun State in Nigeria’s South-West region.
Sponsored by Hon. Olufemi Ogunbanwo, who represents Ijebu Ode, Ijebu North East, and Odogbolu Federal Constituency, alongside three other lawmakers, the bill was approved during plenary session for further consideration.
This development aims to amend the 1999 Constitution as part of the ongoing push for the creation of new states to promote fairness, inclusion, and growth across different parts of the country.
To ground this decision, the presiding officer during this plenary, Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu, referred the proposal to the House Committee on Constitutional Review for additional legislative work.
Currently, report claimed that the National Assembly is accessing the 1999 Constitution, which expectedly, is to improve Nigeria’s federal system and governance structure.
